Serger Basics Class - June and August Dates

If your serger has been sitting in a corner because threading it feels like solving a puzzle—this class is for you.

In this 2-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to confidently operate your serger, starting with threading and stitching basics. We’ll walk through cleaning and maintenance tips to keep your machine running smoothly, and cover how and when to use a 4-thread vs. 3-thread stitch. You’ll also learn how to do a rolled hem and troubleshoot common issues.

Who is this class for?
This class is ideal for sewists who are unfamiliar with—or intimidated by—their serger. It’s also a great warm-up before taking our Beginner Knitwear course, or one of our Serger Project Classes. If you are an absolute beginner on your serger, please read the section below titled "Additional Information".

Location:
This class takes place at Sugarcane Studios, our sewing studio located right above Sewing Studio Fabrics. There is an elevator in the center of the building next to Vapor World for easy access.

Supplies Needed:

• Serger (with power cord and pedal and MANUAL!!!)

• Machine needles

• Long tweezers (often included with your machine)

• 4 spools of thread (please bring 4 different colors)

• Snips or scissors

• Notebook/pen 

Additional Info: Please note that if you have zero experience with your serger, we strongly suggest you take a class about your exact machine model (usually offered by your machine dealer), watch some YouTube videos about your specific machine, and/or schedule a one-on-one class with our instructor instead of, or before, this class.  It is impossible for our instructor to know the ins and outs of every possible serger brand/model, and have time to troubleshoot serious machine issues during a class with 5 other students.  Getting one-on-one help allows you to get concentrated attention and more time to figure out your specific machine.  We offer this service at $65/hr.

• Ages 16+ unless otherwise noted.
  

• Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be made by email.  No refunds within 7 days of the first class.  Instead, we may give you credit to use for future classes or the fabric store.   Once the class has started, missed classes cannot be rescheduled or refunded, but we’ll do our best to help you catch up, if possible. 

• This class has a 3-person minimum.  If we do not reach 3 students by 1 week ahead, you will be notified and your payment will be refunded. 

• Each class has limited space of 6 students, so please register early to reserve your spot.
