Ghanaian Smock Pattern – Women’s & Men’s Sizes S–XL

West African style meets global flair

This loose-fitting top, originally worn in northern Ghana and now beloved across West Africa, is a standout garment with deep cultural roots. Known as fugu or batakari, the Ghanaian Smock is traditionally made from narrow handwoven strips, assembled with wedge-shaped godets that create a graceful flared silhouette.

Perfect for fabric lovers, weavers, and fiber artists, this pattern works beautifully whether you're using custom-woven strips or standard yardage torn into strips. The result is a bold, versatile top that can be worn by anyone.

Men traditionally pair it with trousers or shorts, while women can wear it over leggings or pants—or lengthen it into a dress. The women’s version includes gentle waist shaping with elastic. Layer it over a long- or short-sleeve shirt and you’re ready to turn heads.

The pattern also includes a matching kufi cap and optional embroidery motifs to embellish your finished piece.

Suggested Fabrics:
Cotton, wool, rayon, silk, or blends. For traditionalists, Aso Oke or other handwoven strip cloths are ideal. Match or slightly lighten your facing fabric for best results.
