A classic Elizabethan corset for court or countryside
Create a beautifully structured silhouette with this late 16th- and early 17th-century corset inspired by garments worn by both royalty and working women during the Elizabethan era (1558–1603). M'Lady's Corset includes two historically inspired variations: a square-neck version for upper-class court dress, and a scoop-neck version suitable for everyday wear.
Both corset styles feature a dramatic dropped front waist and wide-set shoulder straps to emphasize the period's elegant, long-waisted shape. Princess seams allow for easy adjustments to fit modern bodies, while boning placement can be customized for desired support. The square-neck version laces up the back and includes front eyelets for strap adjustment. The scoop-neck version fastens in the front with hook-and-eye tape and includes a peplum that echoes the tabbed waistlines of period doublets and stays.
This pattern includes notes on corset construction, eyelet options (handmade or purchased), and historical context.
Suggested Fabrics:
For the outer layer: medium- to heavy-weight stable fabrics such as silk satin, brocade, damask, shantung, dupioni, or cotton damask. Linen and linen blends also work well.
For the lining: same as outer or slightly lighter-weight coordinating fabric.
For inner support layers: see construction notes within the pattern.
