How to Use Scraps in Apparel Sewing

Scraps. We all have them, we all want to use them. In the month of March, Sewing Studio is teaming up with Surge Fabric Shop, Fluid+Drape, and Fab Rick’s to bring the March Scrappiness Challenge to the sewing world. Prizes! Discounts! Inspiration! Read more on this Instagram post.

We all know the common scrap-busting ideas like scrunchies, reusable napkins, and coasters. We’ve searched the internet for the best scrap-busters that are more apparel-based. Did we leave anything off the list? Comment below and share!

Scrap-busting apparel patterns:

Sport Shorts, Friday Pattern Co.

The Sport Shorts are a pay-as-you-can pattern, making them an affordable pattern option. Use any lightweight woven for the body and create fun bias tape from your discarded cotton wovens for the trim. You can even make your own drawstring (keep reading for a tutorial!).

Geodesic Sweatshirt, Blueprint Patterns

The Geodesic Sweatshirt from Blueprint Patterns has a long or cropped view. Gather up all your mid-weight knits like French terry and sweatshirting and piece together this fun puzzle!

Nest Sweatshirt, Sew Liberated

Feeling a little quilty? The Nest Sweatshirt from Sew Liberated features a sawtooth star block in the center panel. Don’t worry if you’ve never quilted before, the directions will guide you through this common quilt design.

Shoestrings or Drawstrings, Connecting Threads

How fun is this? Use your scrappy strips that are at least 2 1/2″ wide to create shoestrings or drawstrings. You can seal the ends with heat-shrink tubing, widely available for purchase online.

The Afternoon Hat, Afternoon Patterns

The Afternoon hat is a basic bucket hat shape, fully lined and ready for a trip outdoors! The pattern is FREE and uses only about 1/2 yard of woven fabric.

Fleece Headband/Earmuffs, Anno & Pum Patterns

If you prefer to keep your head warm and still be able to wear your hair up, the Fleece Headband from Anno & Pum Patterns is for you. It takes very little mid-weight knit fabric to make.

Leather and Flannel Scarf, Delia Creates

If you have some warm flannel scraps and leather pieces, you can make this fun snap scarf from Delia Creates. What a clever way to use up leather!
